Hamas said it had not eager to negotiate with Abbas
Tuesday, a Hamas official said the Islamic movement did not look forward to discussing with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, if he insists on recognition of the Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole representative.
“We do not rush to a dialogue with Abbas if he continues to insist on recognition of the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine as the sole legitimate representative of Palestinians,” said Hamas leader based in Damascus Mohamed Nazal.
According to a website pro-Hamas in Gaza, Mr. Nazal said in Syria: “This shows the confusion and disappointment which saw Mr. Abbas, particularly after the landslide victory of Hamas and the resistance factions in Gaza” .
“Abbas and his escort were waiting for the collapse of Hamas during the Israeli war on Gaza, to climb atop an Israeli tank and return to power,” said Nazal.
“If Abbas conditioned negotiations with us in our recognition of the PLO, we will not hurry to negotiate with him,” said Nazal.
Sunday in Cairo, Abbas has ruled out dialogue with those who do not recognize the PLO as the legitimate representative of Palestinians.
Abbas responded to what the Hamas leader in exile, Khaled Meshaal, who last week called for the formation of a new power to the Palestinians, including political factions “who support armed resistance against Israel.”
