The Kyrgyz parliament approves the closure of the U.S. military base at Manas

The Kyrgyz parliament voted Thursday to close the U.S. military base in Manas, a major logistics hub for operations performed by the United States in Afghanistan.

Parliament dominated by the Ak-Zhol party (in power), the decision adopted by 78 votes against one.

The United States began using the air base shortly after the launch of their anti-terrorist operations in Afghanistan following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was informed in early February its decision to close the Manas airbase.

Kyrgyzstan had signed an agreement with the United States on the Manas airbase in December 2001. Eleven other countries in the coalition against terrorism have joined the agreement from December 2001 to February 2002.

For this reason, Kyrgyzstan must cancel the relevant agreements he signed with the United States and eleven other countries to close the air base at Manas.

In this air base are currently deployed over 1,000 soldiers, including IM for the most part. The United States will have 180 days to leave the Manas air base, after receiving formal notice.
