Brown: Israelis and Palestinians should overcome the problem of the settlements for peace

The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has emigrated Monday its hope that Israel and the Palestinians could overcome the problem of settlements to achieve peace in the West Bank in the near future.

At a press conference after his meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Mr Brown said that Israel must dismantle its settlements.

“One of the obstacles to peace is the defining issue of settlements,” he said, adding that “I hope that during the negotiations at the next weeks or months, it will be recognized as a barrier to cross.

“Establishing a viable Palestinian state with a stable economy and a thriving private sector is a crucial part of this process,” said Brown.

During his stay in London, Mr. Fayyad will attend a two-day forum on trade and investment, which opens its doors Monday in the financial district of London.

The forum will provide an opportunity to explore more opportunities for development, has provided Mr. Brown.

Before meeting with his British counterpart, Mr. Fayyad had told the BBC that “the time has not disappeared” for the creation of two states in the Middle East, adding that the continuation of another concept would “the wrong path to take.”
