China: Death of a fire department official in a forest fire in south-west
An official Fire Department died Monday while trying to control a forest fire extending 10 km in Yunnan province (southwest).
The fire started around 13:30 in the village of Sanjia, Jinning District, 60 km from Kunming, capital of the province. At 20H00, the fire had already burned over 130 hectares. It will be controlled until late in the night, according to spokesman District Jinning.
Firefighters reported that the director of prevention of forest fires had died while leading the fight against the fire. His name is not available yet.
Hundreds of police and firefighters are fighting against the fire, located about 5 km from the village. No other casualties were reported.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
