Javier Solana arrived in Egypt for talks on the conflict in the Gaza Strip
The High Representative of the European Union for foreign policy, Javier Solana, arrived in Cairo Sunday for talks with Egyptian officials on the possibilities to end the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups in the Gaza Strip.
Mr. Solana, who said he is in the interest of the EU to participate in a mission of maintaining peace in the Middle East, urged the two parties opposed to Gaza to conclude a cease-fire immediately, reported the Egyptian news agency MENA.
After his visit to Egypt, Mr. Solana will visit Israel in the Palestinian territories and Jordan, the agency MENA reported.
Sunday morning, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Abul Gheit met with a delegation of EU diplomats to visit Egypt on the Israeli military operation in Gaza.
Mr. Solana could join the EU delegation, which includes the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Karel Schwazenberg, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bernard Kouchner, the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Carl Bildt and the EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, with the aim to promote a cease-fire in Gaza.
Sunday, Israel intensified its attacks on Gaza for the 9th consecutive day, a day after his army had launched a massive ground. The Israeli attacks have killed 514 and injured about 2 600 since December 27, 2008.
