China arrested 60 people involved in the tainted milk scandal
60 suspects have been formally arrested for involvement in the scandal of milk powder brand Sanlu tainted with melamine, causing urinary tract diseases, including kidney stones, among thousands of Chinese children in 2008.
“Twenty-one of them appeared for trial between 26 and December 31, four leaders of the Sanlu Group,” said Zhang Deli, Attorney General of the People’s Procuratorate of Hebei Province in northern China.
“The court will soon announce the verdicts,” Zhang said at the annual session of the Provincial People’s Congress of Hebei underway.
Tian Wenhua, former President of the Board of Directors and former CEO of Sanlu Group, appeared before the court in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province, December 31.
From August 2 to September 12, Sanlu Group has produced 904 tonnes of milk powder contaminated with melamine, including 813 tons were sold for a total of 47.5 million yuan (6.9 million) .
The Chinese Ministry of Health indicated that the contamination of milk had caused the deaths of six babies and that 294 000 children had suffered kidney stones and other urinary diseases.
The Sanlu Group has suspended its production since September 12. The group has filed a bankruptcy petition against debts of 1.1 billion yuan.
The group borrowed 902 million yuan to compensate victims and pay the medical expenses of children fell ill after drinking milk from Sanlu.
