China establishes a test network across the country for the virus of bird flu

An official of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Disease Prevention said Friday that a test network for avian influenza had been implemented throughout the country.

Shu Yuelong, deputy director of department of control and virus prevention center, said network connecting 63 laboratories in 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities.

“Each laboratory capacity to test and identify the virus of bird flu, while some laboratories provincial centers for disease control are able to analyze it,” said Shu.

He said China would add 21 additional laboratories in the network in 2009.

The Ministry of Health has reported a human case of avian influenza January 7, in which a young woman of 19 years died in Beijing.

China had reported its first case of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza in 2005. So far, 30 cases were confirmed and 20 have been fatal.
