The EU and China sign agreement on drug precursors

The European Union and China on Friday signed in Brussels an agreement to strengthen customs cooperation to control trade and prevent trafficking and diversion of drug precursors, chemicals needed to manufacture illicit drugs.

The agreement was signed by European Commissioner for Taxation and Customs Laszla Kovacs, and Chinese Ambassador to the EU, Song Zhe.

Drug precursors are harmless chemicals that are legally used in a wide range of consumer products such as medicines, soaps, perfumes or biocides. They can also be misused in the illicit manufacture of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and methamphetamines.

Based on the agreement reached Friday, China and the EU will for the first time, establish a broad system of legal control of movements of precursors. This will prevent drug precursors are diverted from legitimate trade for use in the manufacture of illicit drugs.
