Moscow and Washington agree to promote bilateral relations

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged to promote bilateral relations and intensify interaction between the two countries, said Tuesday the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During their telephone conversation on Monday, Lavrov and Mrs. Clinton have agreed to maintain regular contact on all bilateral and international issues of common concern, the source added in a statement.

“Emphasis was placed on the importance of strengthening dialogue between the two countries, including negotiations on the strategic and economic cooperation, but also on pressing international issues, including resolving the Afghan issue,” said the Russian Ministry.

The US-Russian relations have deteriorated in recent years following a series of disputes as the proposed missile shield the United States in Central Europe and their support for accession of Ukraine and Georgia at NATO.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin expressed willingness to cooperate with the new U.S. administration of Barack Obama to revive bilateral relations.
