China grants scholarships to poor students demonstrating excellent academic results
China held a ceremony Sunday in Beijing to award scholarships nationally to students from poor families and have demonstrated excellent academic results.
The program, named “the National Scholarship” was established in 2002 and aims to help poor students. About 50 000 students receive the award each year.
State Councilor Liu Yandong said at the ceremony that the government would continue to provide such assistance to poor students despite the financial crisis.
About 700 student representatives attended the ceremony. An evaluation team established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance has selected the winners of the award.
